The Leatherhead Youth Project (LYP) is a local charity rooted in the belief that every young person deserves the chance to feel safe, be heard, and make a positive impact. Operating across Leatherhead, Bookham, and Mole Valley, LYP delivers innovative youth services that respond directly to local needs. At the heart of their approach is youth leadership. Young people are not just participants, but decision-makers. Through youth councils and steering groups, they shape and lead the projects they engage in.

One of LYP’s standout initiatives is Making Good, a social action programme that empowers young people to give back to their community while learning about sustainability. From building compost bins and creating new pathways to planting, maintaining, and harvesting vegetables, participants have transformed shared spaces with their own hands. They’ve also taken part in conservation work, litter picks, painting, and clearing community areas.

What makes Making Good so impactful is its dual focus: it nurtures both the planet and the people. Young participants gain practical skills, fresh perspectives, and a sense of ownership over their environment. They learn the value of reuse, biodiversity, and waste reduction, all while building confidence and leadership.

LYP’s work is a powerful example of how social value and sustainability go hand in hand. By investing in young people and giving them the tools to care for their communities, they’re cultivating a generation that’s not only environmentally conscious but socially connected.

You can show your support for these incredible young changemakers by joining them at their next Gala Dinner on 4th October, a celebration of their achievements and a chance to help them continue making a lasting difference.

We have awarded this article the Nature & Biodiversity Badge badge for hands-on projects that protect and enhance local green spaces. As well as Waste & Recycling Badge badge For championing waste reduction though litter picks and finally the Leading the Way Badge For empowering young people to take the lead, inspire others.
