Did you know that the grazing horses on The Nower play an important role in supporting nature recovery?
As part of #LoveParksWeek, on Friday 24 July, Daniel Brown Horseman and his two French Comtois horses carried out a process known as bracken rolling.
Bracken rolling is an environmentally friendly way of controlling bracken, an invasive plant that thrives in nutrient-rich soils and can gradually take over grassland. By outcompeting more delicate wildflowers and grasses, bracken reduces biodiversity and limits important nectar sources for insects.
Conservation grazing also helps to maintain species-rich chalk grassland by preventing scrub from taking over. This creates the conditions needed for a wide variety of wildflowers, insects and other wildlife to thrive.
The Nower is one of Mole Valley’s most valued green spaces, offering opportunities for recreation, wellbeing and connecting with nature, while supporting important habitats and species.
