In May 2025, Mole Valley District Council reached an important milestone: we were officially recognised as a Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO). This accreditation, awarded by The Carbon Literacy Project, confirms our commitment to building carbon literacy across the council and our community. As one of the Surrey councils pursuing this goal, we’re proud to be leading by example and we’re already looking ahead to the next challenge: Silver accreditation.

What Does Bronze CLO Mean?

Becoming a Bronze CLO means we have:

  • Developed clear plans to train staff and elected members in carbon literacy
  • Committed to positive, ongoing engagement with residents and local businesses on low-carbon choices
  • Shown how our policies and projects will help people take real action to reduce emissions

This recognition not only supports our in-house workforce development it also strengthens our ability to recruit and retain talented staff who share our sustainability values.

Introducing Our Carbon Awareness Course

As a foundation for CLO training, we’ve created a concise, in-house Carbon Awareness Course for Mole Valley staff and members. This course covers:

  • The science of climate change: the greenhouse effect, carbon cycles, and how we’re altering natural systems
  • Local action in practice: designing green parks, supporting clean transport, and investing in green jobs
  • Community and wellbeing: linking climate action to health, equity, and stronger neighbourhoods
  • Everyday emissions: measuring the carbon in our food, travel, and workplace routines
  • Personal and collective pledges: using the WWF carbon calculator, identifying top emissions, and setting clear reduction targets

This course gives everyone a solid grasp of key ideas before they step into full Carbon Literacy Training. If your business would like access to our FREE training course please email sustainability@molevalley.gov.uk for more information.

We’d love to hear from you if you have a story you would like to share with us about how you are taking action to become more sustainable!
