Waste isn’t just something to throw away. It’s an opportunity to rethink, repurpose, and regenerate. The Waste & Recycling category of the Mole Valley Sustainability Awards celebrates the incredible organisations and community groups who are turning discarded items into something meaningful, keeping valuable materials in use and out of landfill.
From creative upcycling to community clean-ups, these changemakers are proving that sustainability starts with action and Mole Valley is full of it.
Craftsmanship meets conservation at Dorking Men’s Shed, where members transform reclaimed wood and salvaged furniture into beautiful, functional pieces. From bird boxes and hedgehog houses to Windsor chairs and park benches, every creation tells a story of reuse, skill, and community spirit.
Repair Cafés are part of a quiet revolution sweeping across communities. These welcoming spaces invite people to slow down, learn together, and fix what’s broken. Whether it’s a toaster, a bike, or a mindset. It’s not just about saving objects; it’s about building a culture of care and connection.
📚 Circular Dorking – Library of Things
Why buy when you can borrow? Dorking’s Library of Things offers tools, equipment, and everyday items for one-off jobs and short-term needs. It’s a brilliant way to reduce consumption, save money, and cut down on waste while sharing resources across the community.
🚮 Leigh & Bookham Litter Pickers
These dedicated teams of volunteers are out in force, collecting rubbish and recycling materials to keep their local areas clean and cared for. Their work is a powerful reminder that small, consistent actions can have a big impact on our shared spaces. Margret from the Bookham litter picking community has been nominated for co-ordinated a Bookham litter pick every month since spring 2016. She has all ages helping with some of the young people doing this as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award and Beaver Scouts doing their bit for the community.
Fashion with purpose. The Community Wardrobe rescues clothing from landfill and redistributes it to those in need. It’s a beautiful blend of environmental action and social support, proving that sustainability and compassion go hand in hand.
These organisations are showing us that waste isn’t the end of the story it’s the beginning of something better. Through creativity, collaboration, and care, they’re helping Mole Valley build a more circular, connected future.
